The words “unseasonably cold” are not unfamiliar to most of us in Green Bay, except when they are used to describe summer weather. To have forty plus days below normal temperatures during the summer seems almost cruel given the length and severity of our winters. I have been examining my tomato plants almost daily and am wondering if the dozens of green tomatoes will ever ripen. It’s a transitional time of the year for gardens. The best of the summer blooms are fading fast and the look of fall is slowly creeping in. But take heart! Planting in late August for fall blossoms can revive the color of your gardens and add interest into the winter. Here are a few suggestions for late summer color. Perennial Sunflowers add a splash of yellow, and Aster come in a variety of colors. I also recommend Hardy Mums, Sedum, Helenium, Anise Hyssop and Russian Sage. Extend your garden season into the fall with these late bloomers!
