For many of us in the Midwest, October is a transition month from nice fall weather to a preview of snow and cold to come. It is also the month that we start our fall clean-up of our gardens and lawns. Our tomatoes, peppers, squash and cucumbers have all been harvested and plants removed and taken to the compost pile. Late October lawn fertilization is very important to help your grass over-winter. Nitrogen is the most important nutrient. Fertilize in late fall with about a pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn. Find a slow release nitrogen fertilizer, so that it will feed slowly and remain in the root zone until spring. October is also a good time to fire up the snow blower and make sure it’s in top running condition. If that’s not the case, you can beat the rush at your local dealer by servicing your snow blower now before the rush is on! More fall garden tips to come!!
