The Holiday Season is upon us and many Poinsettia plants will adorn our homes for the holidays. Sadly, most of these plants will find the trash after the celebrating is over. Take pity on these beauties. They can be trained to bloom again for years to come. After the holidays are over, stop watering the plants and allow the bracts (the colored leaves) to drop off. Store your plant in a cool (50 degree) dry area for the winter. In spring, the plant can be repotted with fresh potting mix and begin to water. The poinsettia blooms in response to shortened sunlight. In late September or early October, place the plant in total darkness for 12 to 14 hours per day. You can place a box over the plant to accomplish this. Make sure to give the plant full sun for the remainder of the day. You should see blooms by mid-December!
Wishing you all the best this Holiday Season!
