Now that the weather is finally beginning to warm up, many of us are turning our attention to getting the gardens spruced up and ready for another season. We pay particular attention to removal of dead growth, weeding, pruning and planting, but how many of us are concerned with the soil itself? Having the proper soil conditions are the key to healthy plants and a beautiful garden. But how do you know if your soil needs help? Fortunately there is help available. Many State Universities offer State Extension Services or Cooperative Extension Services which will analyze your soil and tell you if it is deficient in any nutrients. They can also tell you if your soil pH is correct. If you are not a soils expert and have trouble interpreting the test results, a great resource guide can be found at http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~blpprt/bobweb/bobweb.html. This web site, run by Dr. Bob Lippert of ClemsonUniversity, provides a wealth of information on soil sampling techniques, and interpreting soil analysis results. I hope you find it useful!
