Greetings from your friends at ENCAP! The holidays are over and the long wait until Spring arrives has begun It might seem like a long way off, but what better way to pass the winter than to plan for a new bedding in your yard, or changing up the existing plantings in your garden. Start to make a list of perennials or annuals you wish to try next year. Do a bit of research to make sure the plant variety is right for your geography and soil type. It is also a good time to take stock of your garden supplies and make a list of any soil amendments you will want to use in spring. Will you need to add extra organic material to your soil? How was the soil pH on your last test? Lime can be used to neutralize acidic soils, or if you have acid loving plants, you can use sulfur to help lower soil pH. If you have not tested you soil recently, consider taking a soil sample in spring and having it analyzed. Check with your local Cooperative Extension Office for assistance.
