The weather has turned milder this past week. There are many reasons that fall can be the best season for gardening. Many Annuals are tolerant of frost and will continue to bloom into November. Pansies, snapdragons, ornamental kale and alyssums will provide nice color into the fall. Purple Cone flower can be left to over-winter and provide seeds for small birds. Growth of perennials and bushes has slowed giving you a much needed break from trimming, allowing for time to plan for next year. A short check of projects for fall should include planning any fall planting of bulbs. You will also want to fertilize your lawn with a good blend containing a slow release nitrogen, and continue mowing until turf stops growing or the snow flies. Keep foundations around the house clear of excessive plant material to discourage nesting of moles and voles.
Most importantly, relax and enjoy you gardens and the love you have given them this past season!
