Easy does it!

Posted By: ProEgan on 6/7/2011

Hey everyone!

Have you ever noticed that sometimes after you fertilize your lawn you get a good boost of green, and then that fades quickly and the grass starts to look pale?  You can harm your turf by over-applying nitrogen fertilizers.  More is not always better when it comes to applying nitrogen fertilizer.  If you over apply nitrogen, it will produce an excess of above ground growth (which means more mowing) at the expense of root growth.  This in turn can leave the grass more susceptible to certain diseases and draught.  Some nitrogen fertilizers are highly water soluble and are immediately available to the plant.  They will not stay in the soil long and leach with rain below the roots.  Other forms of nitrogen are water insoluble and these are called slow release fertilizers.  A good rule of thumb is to have a good percent of the nitrogen in the product that is slow release.  This gives the turf a better chance to utilize the fertilizer and spreads out the feeding.

Happy Growing!
