The Water Quality Issue

Sediment and nutrients running into surface waters must be stopped and/or controlled in order to minimize the impact on water quality and aquatic life, including increased turbidity (floating sediment) and excessive phosphorus bloom effects.

The Solution

In order to proactively improve water quality, both the surrounding lands and the incoming waters need to be properly controlled.  Implement a water quality prevention measure requiring better control of high sedimentation areas surrounding critical surface waters and better treatment of the inlet waters contributing to the environmental risk.

The Measure

There are two components to the solution.  The first is to utilize existing Advanced Soil Technology ™ (AST™) to control the movement/loss of sedimentation, targeted nutrients, and contaminants into critical surface waters.  AST™ is designed to control large areas of exposed soil with very little inert matter by using ionic bonds formed by the AST™ to hold sediment in place, increase the permeability of soil (thereby reducing overland flow of water and transported sediment), and to serve as a flocculent (binder) to reduce turbidity.  To accomplish this, AST™ granules are land applied through conventional methods in targeted areas.  Rain, the precipitator of erosion, activates the prevention technology.

Second, utilize existing Crystal Clear Technology™ (CCT™) to pre-treat problem inlet waters flowing into critical surface waters to serve as a means of decreasing the amount sediment, nutrients, and contaminants in water that is higher than desired.  CCT™ is installed in the water upstream of the inlets leading to the critical surface waters.  The CCT™ is released into the water, and precipitates out targeted sediment/contaminants.
