Encapsulated Seed Technology
Overview
ENCAP has developed and patented the product, process, and method for wrapping seeds in a blanket of dry particulate, called seed encapsulation (EncapSeed).
The concepts behind EncapSeed are simple. The first is to create protective, nutrient-rich, moisture-absorbing blanket that is wrapped around each seed which makes life easier for the seed. The next is to combine three products (premium grass seed, fertilizer and mulch) into a single product with a simple one-step application process utilizing conventional equipment that makes life easier for the user.
EncapSeeds are specially designed to create the perfect environment for each seed as it advances through the three steps of germination:
The moisture-absorbing blanket enhances the germination process by absorbing and holding water around each seed. Each EncapSeed controls the microenvironment around the seed by providing the precise amount of each component to maximize performance.
History
ENCAP’s initial product offering in 2000 featured the encapsulated seed technology in both the retail and professional products. Though research by UW-Madison, and field test conducted with local landscapers suggested the product contained all the necessary features and benefits to be successful, there was an added delay to the germination process of the seed that the market found to be unacceptable. In 2002, the product was held from release until further development could continue to address this issue. In the fall of 2002, bench top tests were conducted to add water-soluble polyacrylamides (WSPAMs) to the encapsulation process. Results were viewed as positive as the protective layer could be seen as the polymer worked to break up the matrix of fibers formed around each seed.
ENCAP sees this technology to be in the final developmental phase. With the proper agronomic support, final research could be completed on this technology prior to it’s re-release into the market.
Research
This technological blanket enables each seed to thrive in a variety of growing conditions. Independent studies performed by the University of Wisconsin – Madison have proven that EncapSeed products are superior to traditional turf seed in turf quality, uniformity and establishment.
